Fairmount Cemetery and reinterment from Mount Prospect Cemetery

In the late 19th century, human remains and monuments from Denver's earlier Mount Prospect/City Cemetery were disinterred and reinterred at Fairmount Cemetery; this transfer is documented in historical records. The original cemetery land later became Cheesman Park, and local lore has long claimed that some remains were left behind or later unearthed during park work. Those claims are debated; newspaper reports and city records document the relocation, while anecdotal reports about remaining bones have circulated without conclusive scientific verification. Fairmount Cemetery continues to maintain records and the reinterred graves are part of its documented grounds.
