Salk Institute (Jonas Salk)

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies was founded by Jonas Salk in 1960 as an independent research institute in La Jolla. The campus, designed by architect Louis Kahn and completed in the mid-1960s, is widely cited for its architectural significance as well as its scientific output. Jonas Salk established the institute following his development of the polio vaccine to provide a center for biomedical research. The institute remains an active research facility and landmark.
