Establishment and renaming of Johnson Space Center

NASA established the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston in 1961 to manage U.S. crewed spaceflight programs. In 1973 the facility was renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Since its founding, the center has hosted mission control and supported Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, and International Space Station operations.
