Washington Monument: world's tallest structure (1884–1889)

The Washington Monument was completed in 1884 and at 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall became the tallest man-made structure in the world upon completion. It held that status until the completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889. The obelisk remains an iconic, intentionally tall memorial to George Washington managed by the National Park Service.
