Equitable Life Building (Manhattan)

The Equitable Life Assurance Building, located at 120 Broadway in Manhattan, was the first office building in the world to feature passenger elevators, revolutionizing office space design. Completed in 1870, it originally stood 130 feet tall and expanded to 155 feet by 1885. Designed by Arthur Gilman and Edward H. Kendall, the building showcased a mix of brick, granite, and iron, occupying an entire city block. Despite being advertised as fireproof, it was destroyed in a fire in 1912. The building's ornate interior included a grand clerking hall and a bustling arcade with shops and a restaurant, making it a microcosm of urban life. A new 40-story Equitable Building was erected on the site in 1915, continuing the legacy of this architectural landmark.
