Edward Searle House

The Edward Searle House, located in Cranston, Rhode Island's Oaklawn village, is one of the state's oldest surviving structures. Originally built in 1670, it was reconstructed in 1677 after surviving destruction during King Philip's War. The house features a 1+1⁄2-story gable-roofed stone end, with significant remodeling occurring around 1720. Edward Searle, the house's namesake, was connected to the original land purchasers from Native Americans. A unique feature of the house is a large chalkboard on the front porch, which often displays messages for visitors.
