Fort Negley (Civil War earthworks, largely gone)

Fort Negley was constructed by Union forces in 1862 as a large masonry and earthwork fortification overlooking downtown Nashville; it relied heavily on labor by formerly enslaved people and contrabands. After the Civil War the fort fell into disrepair, its stone and materials were scavenged, and much of the original structure was lost before later archaeological work and partial reconstruction. The site today is Fort Negley Park, where surviving earthworks and interpreted remnants mark the location of the former fort.
