Nathaniel W. Dean House

The Nathaniel W. Dean House, built around 1856 in Madison, Wisconsin, is a historic Italianate-style home associated with Nathaniel W. Dean, an influential early leader and developer in the area. Dean, who arrived in Madison in 1842, played a significant role in local business and politics, including supporting the construction of the third state capitol and advocating for Negro suffrage. The house, which features a simple yet elegant design, was initially a country retreat for Dean and his wife. After changing hands several times, it was saved from demolition in the 1970s and now serves as a museum, showcasing the history of 19th century Madison and the early years of Blooming Grove. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, making it a notable destination for tourists and researchers interested in local history.
