Black House, Lviv

The Black House, a stunning Renaissance building located in Lviv's Market Square, was constructed in 1577 for Italian tax-collector Tomaso Alberti. Known for its darkened sandstone façade and intricate decorative elements, it has served as the Lviv Historical Museum since 1926, showcasing the history of Ukrainian emigration and culture. The building features a unique architectural style with diamond rustication and polychrome decorations. Its name derives from the oxidation of its façade over time. Recent renovations have aimed to preserve its historical significance while enhancing its exhibition spaces.
