Smithsonian’s National Zoo - free, year-round urban zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo, part of the Smithsonian Institution, is located in Woodley Park and has offered free admission to the public since its founding in 1889. The zoo is open every day of the year and houses more than 2,700 animals representing nearly 400 species, serving as a frequent family and neighborhood destination for Washington residents. It also conducts conservation research and public education programs that engage local schools and community groups.
