Originally serving as the headquarters for the Arbroath Burgh Council, the building has a rich history, including its use for court hearings and as a jail complex. In 2007, it gained recognition from the European Union for its role in the production of Arbroath smokies, a local delicacy. After closing as a courthouse in 2014, the building was acquired by a community trust in 2020, with plans to transform it into a community hub, making it a focal point for both tourists and researchers interested in local heritage.
