Old Brulay Plantation

The Old Brulay Plantation, established around 1870 in Brownsville, Texas, is a historic site that showcases the agricultural history of the region. Founded by French immigrant George Paul Brulay, the plantation initially focused on cotton and later transitioned to sugar production, featuring a sugar mill built circa 1876. Notably, it operated without enslaved labor, as it was established after the Civil War. The plantation faced challenges in the early 20th century, leading to its closure around 1910. It has changed hands several times, with the Nye family acquiring it in 1931, and it remains in their possession today.
