Eastern State Penitentiary - historic prison and museum

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 and introduced a radial cellblock design and a system of solitary confinement that influenced prison architecture worldwide. The site operated as a prison until 1971 and is now a museum and National Historic Landmark offering tours and historic preservation programs. Its crumbling cellblocks and preserved cell of Al Capone are prominent features interpreted for visitors.
