Castle Garden immigration station (function moved 1890)

Castle Garden (Castle Clinton) in Battery Park served as New York City's immigrant landing and processing center from 1855 until federal immigration control moved operations to Ellis Island in 1890. The structure later housed the New York Aquarium from 1896 to 1941. The circular sandstone fort itself remains, but its role as the city's immigration gateway has vanished. The site is now managed as Castle Clinton National Monument at 1 Battery Park.
