Congregational Church (Osawatomie, Kansas)

The Congregational Church in Osawatomie, Kansas, built between 1858 and 1861, is a historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013. It was founded by Samuel L. Adair, an abolitionist and relative of John Brown, who organized the church after moving to the area in 1855. The church played a significant role during the tumultuous times of the Kansas Territory, particularly during the battles of Osawatomie in 1856. Constructed from local limestone with elements of Greek and Gothic Revival architecture, it features a belfry with an original iron bell and has been preserved as a symbol of resilience and community spirit.
