Hockley Forge and Mill

Hockley Forge and Mill, located along the Patapsco River in Elkridge, Maryland, is a historic site featuring colonial-era industrial buildings. Established in 1760 by Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the forge was significant for producing goods locally, reducing reliance on imports from England. At its peak in the 19th century, the site housed over 30 industrial buildings, including a grist mill, saw mill, and blacksmith shop. The area is notable for its rich history, including its operation by enslaved individuals and its role in the early industrial revolution. Visitors can explore remnants of the forge and mill, as well as the iconic Thomas Viaduct, a stone arch bridge built in 1833 that played a crucial role in the development of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
