Coit Tower looks like a fire hose nozzle

Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill is commonly said to have been designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle, a myth tied to its benefactor Lillie Hitchcock Coit’s longtime support of San Francisco firefighters. The tower was funded by Coit’s bequest and designed by architects Arthur Brown Jr. and Henry Howard; the architects and some historians say any resemblance to a nozzle is coincidental. The tower contains New Deal-era murals that sparked contemporary political controversy and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
