The Alamo and the 1836 siege

The Alamo began as Mission San Antonio de Valero and was the site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, fought from February 23 to March 6, 1836, during the Texas Revolution. Texian defenders were besieged by Mexican forces under General Santa Anna; the battle became a pivotal and widely commemorated event in Texas history. The site today functions as a museum and historic shrine visited by millions annually.
