Kenmare House

Kenmare House, located on the scenic east shore of Lough Leane, was the principal residence of the Browne family, Earls of Kenmare, and played a significant role in the history of Killarney. Originally built in 1726, the house showcased French chateau influences and was part of a vast 137,000-acre estate. The Brownes, who reverted to Catholicism, managed to retain their lands during the Penal Laws. The estate became a hub for tourism in the 19th century, attracting notable visitors including Queen Victoria, who helped establish Killarney as a popular tourist destination. The original house was demolished in 1872, and subsequent structures were built, with the latest Kenmare House completed in 1974. The estate's rich history and its connection to literary figures and royalty make it a fascinating site for tourists and researchers alike.
