Smithsonian Institution Building ('The Castle') and Joseph Henry

The Smithsonian Institution Building, commonly called the Castle, was completed in the 1850s and served as the original administrative and exhibition building for the Smithsonian. Joseph Henry, the Smithsonian's first Secretary, had his offices in the Castle and oversaw early institutional development there. The building remains a central Smithsonian landmark and contains visitor information and administrative functions.
