Peperbus

The Peperbus, meaning 'pepper pot' in Afrikaans, is a unique hexagonal building located on Meyburgh Street in Fraserburg, South Africa. Built in 1861, it originally served as a market house and has since taken on various roles, including a library and municipal office. Standing about 8 meters tall, the Peperbus features a striking design with a large cockpit window and a hexagonal dome topped with a weather vane. It is one of three national heritage sites in Fraserburg and is celebrated for its architectural significance and historical importance. Despite facing potential demolition, community support has ensured its preservation, and restoration efforts began in 2016. The Peperbus remains a symbol of Fraserburg's heritage, with its bell still ringing nightly, echoing the town's rich history.
