San Jose State's "Speed City" track program

San Jose State University's track program, coached by Lloyd "Bud" Winter in the 1960s, was nicknamed "Speed City" and produced multiple Olympic medalists including Tommie Smith, John Carlos, and Lee Evans. These athletes trained and competed for San Jose State and achieved international success at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The program and its coaches are widely documented as a major chapter of San Jose's athletic history. Facilities on the San Jose State campus were central to the development of these sprinters.
