Watergate complex - site of the 1972 DNC break-in

The Watergate complex at 2600 Virginia Ave NW was the location of the June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee offices and the subsequent investigations. The burglary, the cover-up by members of the Nixon administration, and the ensuing investigations led to congressional hearings and the 1974 resignation of President Richard Nixon. The term 'Watergate' subsequently entered common usage as shorthand for political scandal.
