Sprague, Brown, and Knowlton Store

The Sprague, Brown, and Knowlton Store, built in 1866 in Winterset, Iowa, is a notable historic building recognized for its vernacular limestone architecture. Constructed from locally sourced ashlar and rubble stone, this two-story structure showcases unique features such as chamfered quoins and a bracketed stone cornice, attributed to local stonemason David Harris. Although the storefront has undergone alterations, the building remains a significant part of the area's history, being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and contributing to the Winterset Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District since 2015. This site offers visitors a glimpse into the architectural heritage of the 19th century in Iowa.
