Hadrian's Library

Hadrian's Library, built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 132, is a remarkable ruin located on the north side of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This monumental structure features a grand entrance with Karystian marble columns and a Corinthian propylon, showcasing Roman architectural style. The library housed papyrus scrolls in its eastern section, surrounded by reading rooms and lecture halls, all adorned with gilded ceilings and marble walls. Although it suffered significant damage during the Herulian invasion in 267, it was later repaired and integrated into the Roman city walls. The site also features remnants of three Byzantine churches, including the first cathedral of Athens, Megali Panagia, and a statue of the goddess Nike, making it a fascinating destination for tourists and researchers alike.
