Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse

The Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse, built in 1908 in Jersey City, New Jersey, played a crucial role in powering the subway system connecting New Jersey and New York. Under the leadership of William Gibbs McAdoo, it facilitated the operations of the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad, which evolved into PATH in 1962. Although it closed in 1929 and fell into disrepair, it was recognized for its architectural and historical significance, earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Located near the revitalizing Harborside Financial Center, the powerhouse is a symbol of early 20th-century engineering and has undergone stabilization efforts to preserve its legacy.
