Lorraine Motel - site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination and the National Civil Rights Museum

On April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on the second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. The motel building and adjacent grounds now house the National Civil Rights Museum, which includes the preserved motel room and exhibits documenting the assassination and the civil rights movement. The museum opened in 1991 and interprets King's death in the broader context of civil rights history in the United States.
