Girard College - endowed by Stephen Girard

Girard College was established according to the will of Stephen Girard (1750–1831), a Philadelphia merchant and banker who left his estate to found a boarding school for poor boys. The institution's founding and the restrictions in Girard's will (including initial racial and gender limitations) became the subject of legal and civil-rights disputes in the 20th century, resulting in changes to admissions policies. The campus and its charter remain a documented legacy of Stephen Girard's philanthropy in Philadelphia.
