Black Friars' Monastery of Stockholm

The Black Friars' Monastery, founded in 1336 by King Magnus IV, was a significant Dominican monastery located on Stadsholmen in central Stockholm. Although demolished in 1547 by Gustav Vasa, remnants of its impressive vaults can still be explored today. The monastery played a crucial role in medieval Stockholm, serving as a political hub and burial site for Swedish royalty, including Queen Beatrix of Bavaria. Visitors can walk along Svartmangatan, a street that echoes the history of the Black Friars, and view preserved basement rooms that once sheltered travelers and pilgrims, now managed by the Museum of Medieval Stockholm.
