Downpatrick Courthouse

Downpatrick Courthouse, located on English Street in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, is a historic Grade B+ listed building with a rich history dating back to its completion in 1735. Originally designed in the Neoclassical style by Hugh Darling, it served as a judicial facility and the headquarters of Down County Council until 1973. The site is believed to have once housed St John the Evangelist's Priory, established by Saint Malachy in the 12th century. Notable features include a symmetrical nine-bay façade, a central porch, and intricate carvings of the Royal coat of arms. The courthouse has witnessed significant events, including a dramatic escape in 2003 and a play premiere in 2017, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers exploring the area's legal and cultural history.
