California Academy of Sciences (living roof and museum complex)

The California Academy of Sciences, founded in 1853, reopened in a new, sustainably designed building in Golden Gate Park in 2008. The facility combines an aquarium, a natural history museum, and the Morrison Planetarium under a 2.5-acre living roof planted with native species. Its green roof, energy-efficient systems, and integrated science exhibits are frequently cited as examples of contemporary museum architecture and environmental design.
