Baldwin Spencer Building

The Baldwin Spencer Building, located at The University of Melbourne's Parkville Campus, is a historic academic facility built between 1887 and 1888. Initially known as the Biology Building, it was renamed in honor of Sir Baldwin Spencer, the university's first professor of biology. This Gothic Revival structure features distinctive architectural elements such as rusticated freestone walls and a conical turret. The building originally housed a lecture theatre, laboratories, and a museum, and retains many original features from the 1890s. In 2011, it was repurposed as a student service centre and learning space, while preserving its historical lecture theatre. The building is significant for its architectural style and its role in advancing science education in Victoria.
