Old Man House

The Old Man House, once the largest winter longhouse in Washington State, served as the heart of the Suquamish village of dxʷsəq̓ʷəb, meaning 'clear salt water.' This historic site was home to notable chiefs, including Kitsap and Seattle. Archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited for over 2000 years, with the longhouse likely constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century. Despite its destruction by the U.S. government in 1870, the Suquamish people rebuilt their village. Today, the site is part of a state park, returned to the Suquamish Tribe in 2004, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region.
