City Hall subway station - historic closed station and ghost-train lore

New York City’s original IRT City Hall station opened on October 27, 1904 and was closed to regular passenger service on December 31, 1945 due to its tight curved platform and inability to accommodate longer trains. The station remains intact below City Hall and is occasionally opened on limited tours by the New York Transit Museum. Anecdotal stories and urban legends claim sightings of ghost trains or unexplained lights at the abandoned station; such accounts are not substantiated by transit authorities.
