Assassinations and arrest of Dan White at San Francisco City Hall

On November 27, 1978, former Supervisor Dan White entered San Francisco City Hall and fatally shot Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. White was arrested and charged in connection with the killings; in 1979 he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter after a trial in which his defense argued diminished capacity. The verdict provoked the White Night riots in San Francisco and had lasting political and procedural impacts on the city.
