Benwell Dene

Benwell Dene is a stunning Victorian house located in the suburb of Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne, designed by the renowned architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1865. Originally built for Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, a prominent banker and historian, the house showcases beautiful Tudor Gothic architecture and is constructed from sandstone. In 1894, Hodgkin donated the property to the Royal Victoria Home, and the surrounding gardens were transformed into a public park, now known as Hodgkin Park. The building served as the Royal Victoria School for the Blind for nearly 90 years before being converted into a hotel after its closure in 1985. As a Grade II listed building, Benwell Dene offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history and architectural heritage of Newcastle.
