The Peacock Room at the Freer Gallery

The Peacock Room, painted and installed by James McNeill Whistler in the 1870s, is housed intact in the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art. Charles Lang Freer acquired and donated the room as a single decorative interior to the Smithsonian Institution. The room is a rare surviving example of a fully designed artist-decorated interior from the period and is a signature object in the Freer’s collection.
