The Octagon House (temporary executive mansion after 1814)

Built 1799–1801, the Octagon is one of Washington's earliest surviving examples of Federal-style residential architecture. After the British burned the White House in August 1814, President James Madison used the Octagon as a temporary executive mansion from September 1814 to March 1815. The building now operates as a historic house museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
