Coit Tower murals and bequest

Coit Tower was constructed in 1933 using a bequest from Lillie Hitchcock Coit to benefit San Francisco firefighters and the city. The interior contains fresco murals completed in 1934 by a group of artists working under New Deal art programs; some murals prompted controversy at the time for depicting labor and political themes. The tower stands atop Telegraph Hill and is a well-known city landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
