Maspeth Gas Holders

The Maspeth Gas Holders, also known as the Greenpoint Gas Holders, were iconic twin structures in Brooklyn, New York City, standing 400 feet tall. Constructed in 1927 and 1948 by Brooklyn Union Gas, they were notable for their red and white checkered tops, designed to prevent airplane collisions. By the 1990s, both holders fell into disuse and were eventually demolished in July 2001. Their history reflects the evolution of urban infrastructure and the transition from industrial use to community engagement in Brooklyn.
