Northbrook Gate

The Northbrook Gate, located in Guwahati, Assam, is a historic monument built in 1874 to welcome British Viceroy Lord Northbrook. This unique Indo-gothic structure, featuring 12 arches and a blend of gothic and Indian temple designs, stands as a testament to colonial architecture and is the only surviving brick monument of its kind in the region. Over the years, it has witnessed significant events, including the arrival of other dignitaries and the storage of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes before immersion in the Brahmaputra. Despite its historical significance, the gate faces challenges in preservation, but recent government initiatives aim to restore this iconic landmark, making it a point of interest for tourists and researchers alike.
