Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade (reclaimed riverfront)

The Charles River Esplanade, including the Hatch Memorial Shell, was created using fill and dredged material associated with construction of the Charles River Dam and basin in the early 20th century. The Esplanade transformed former tidal flats and river margins into continuous recreational land along the river, changing the pre-dam shoreline geometry. The Hatch Shell sits on this engineered riverfront, illustrating how the river's edge was reshaped for parkland and roadways.
