Troy Gas Light Company

The Troy Gas Light Company, established in 1848 in Troy, New York, was a pioneering gas lighting provider that held a monopoly on illuminating gas production for nearly three decades. Its notable structure, the Troy Gasholder Building, designed by engineer Frederick A. Sabbaton, is one of the few remaining examples of 19th-century gasworks architecture. The gasholder, capable of storing 333,000 cubic feet of gas, played a crucial role in the city's gas distribution system. Although the company ceased operations in the 1920s, the gasholder house has since been repurposed for various uses, including storage and community events, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers exploring industrial heritage.
