Davenport House (Creswell, North Carolina)

Davenport House is a historic cottage built around 1815, located in Creswell, North Carolina. This 1+1⁄2-story timber-frame structure exemplifies the coastal cottage architectural style and is the oldest homestead open to the public in the region. It features a unique layout with a one-room core and an engaged porch, alongside several historic outbuildings including a smoke house and corn crib. The property, once owned by Daniel Davenport, the first representative to the North Carolina Senate from Washington County, offers insights into early 19th-century homesteading life. After being gifted to the Historical Society of Washington County in 1995, it underwent restoration and opened as a museum in 1999, showcasing both replica and original artifacts from the era. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, making it a significant site for tourists and researchers interested in North Carolina's history.
