New Almaden Quicksilver Mining District - mercury mining and miner folklore

New Almaden was a 19th-century mercury (quicksilver) mining district whose operations began in the 1840s and continued into the 20th century; the Casa Grande and other buildings associated with the mines are now interpreted at the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum. The hazardous nature of mercury mining and documented miner fatalities during the period have produced local folklore and ghost stories connected to the former mining sites.
