Cabrillo National Monument and Old Point Loma Lighthouse

Cabrillo National Monument commemorates Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo’s 1542 landing on the Pacific coast; historians debate the exact landing date and precise location. The park includes the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which was built in 1855 and deactivated in 1891 because its light was frequently obscured by fog at that elevation. The monument provides panoramic views of San Diego Bay and protects intertidal tide pools on the ocean side of Point Loma.
