Mutual Building

The Mutual Building, located in Cape Town, South Africa, is an iconic example of art deco architecture, completed in 1940 as the headquarters for the Old Mutual insurance company. Notable for its dramatic ziggurat structure and one of the longest carved stone friezes in the world, the building reflects the colonial attitudes of its time. After serving as a corporate office for less than two decades, it was converted into residential space, with parts still used for commercial purposes, including an events venue in the former Banking Hall. The building's rich history traces back to the founding of the Old Mutual in 1845, and its design was influenced by global architectural trends, making it a significant landmark in Cape Town's urban landscape.
