Guardian Telephone Exchange

The Guardian Exchange, an underground telephone exchange in Manchester, was constructed between 1954 and 1957 as a hardened communication hub in case of nuclear war. It connects the UK government to the US via a secure transatlantic cable. Located over 35 meters underground, the site features extensive tunnels and was equipped with power generators, air scrubbers, and even recreational facilities. Although now primarily used for telephone cabling, it was once a well-kept secret and is known for its historical significance and unique architecture. Visitors may find interest in its role during emergencies, such as a notable fire in 2004 that disrupted communication across the region.
