City Tavern (Founders' dining legend)

The original City Tavern opened on this site in 1773 and contemporary accounts record that delegates to the Continental Congress, including George Washington and John Adams, dined at the tavern. The building on the site was demolished in the 19th century and a reconstructed City Tavern opened in 1976 as a living-history restaurant and museum interpreting 18th-century dining. The tavern's association with prominent Revolutionary figures has been a persistent element of local legend and commemoration.
