Skilbeck's Warehouse

Skilbeck's Warehouse, built in 1866 in London by architect William Burges, was a remarkable example of Gothic architecture adapted for commercial use. Commissioned by the Skilbeck Brothers, a long-established drysalter company, the warehouse featured innovative design elements such as twin pointed bays and exposed cast iron, which were revolutionary for its time. Notable artistic details included a crane supported by a carved bust symbolizing the origins of the materials used. Although it was demolished after 1970, it remains a significant example of merging art with mercantile functionality, praised by critics for its unique architectural style.
